“Nature” Department

The “Nature” Department of the Rousse Regional Museum of History is founded in 1954 by the teacher and natural scientist Mihail Halvadzhiev. For the base of the department served part of the collection of the Natural History class room of the “Knyaz Boris” State Boys’ High School in Rousse. A contribution to its enrichment is possessed by all of the natural history teachers that worked there, but the greatest contribution is made by the taxidermist Yurii Shumlyanski and the teacher Vasil Kovachev.
In 1959 was opened the first exhibition of the department, which existed up to 1969.
From 1957 to 1979 the taxidermist was Ivan Ivanov.
From 1958 to 1960 the curator was Veselin Beshovski.
From 1960 to 1994 the curator was Eberhard Undzhiyan.
From 1979 to 2007 the taxidermist is Simeon Simeonov.
From 2007 up to present the taxidermist is Hristo Hristov.
From 1994 to 1995 the curator was Veneta Glushkova.
From 1996 to the present the curator is Ventseslav Petkov.
In 2003 the botanist Maya Kubratova joined the department and covered the activities of the “Botany” and “Geology” sections.
From 1970 to 1989 the department has been moved entirely or partially in extremely unsuitable premises 14 times and has changed its address 5 times.
Since 1989 for the first time in 19 years the taxidermy laboratory, the office, the library and part of the collection of the department are located together in one building.
As of this moment, the collection funds of the museum are keeping over 7000 items of the sections Vertebrate, Invertebrate, Geology, Paleontology and Botany, as well as over 5000 lantern-slides, negatives, photographs and over 6000 books and periodical literature.
